Montgomery County Swim League has finished their summer swim season with their Divisionals meets yesterday. The end of the summer swim has come just in time for us to sit back and watch our favorite Maryland swimmers representing Team USA in Tokyo.
The summer swim season shows nuances of Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky as swimmers vie to drop time against their competitors in the dual meets aiming for all-star times. You’ll see young swimmers checking their times and the points they’ve racked up in the hopes of winning their division at the end of the summer.
Not only do young Maryland swimmers have Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky to hold up as Olympic role models, but they also have Chase Kalisz, Andrew Wilson, and Phoebe Bacon.
Unsurprisingly, Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian with 23 gold medals, three silvers, and two bronzes. However, this year, instead of competing in the Summer Games, he will comment and give insight into the swimming events from his perch in Tokyo.
Katie Ledecky is a three-time Olympian from Montgomery County. She’s a local girl and fan favorite for my children, who just finished their summer swim season with Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL). Anyone who has met her in person has said that she is one of the nicest people they have ever met.
Ledecky made her debut in the 2012 London Olympics, winning gold in the 800 freestyle. She returned to swim again in 2016, competing in Rio, and walked away with gold in the 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 800 freestyle, and the 4x200 freestyle. She added silver in the 4x100 freestyle to her cache of medals. She’s back in Tokyo, already earning a silver in the 400-meter freestyle. She has opportunities to medal in three more events: 200-meter freestyle, 800 freestyle, and 1,500 freestyle.
Ledecky will be swimming on Monday, July 26th: Women’s 200 Freestyle Heats at 6:02am (ET), Women’s 1500 Freestyle Heats at 7:32am, and the Women’s 200 Freestyle semifinals at 9:30pm.
The Women’s 200 Freestyle Finals will be on July 27th at 9:41pm (ET) and Women’s 1500 Freestyle Finals at 10:54pm (ET).
The Women’s 4x200 Freestyle Relay will be on Wednesday, July 28. The relay heats begin at 7:34am (ET) and the relay finals at 11:31pm (ET).
Ledecky will compete in the Women’s 800 freestyle heat on July 29 at 6:02am (ET), and the Finals will be on Friday, July 30 at 9:45pm (ET)
Chase Kalisz is a two-time Olympian from Bel Air, Maryland. His Olympic debut was in the 2016 Summer Games in Rio where he won the silver medal in the 400-meter Individual Medley swimming 100 meters each in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle.
While in Tokyo, he has already won gold for Team USA in the 400-meter individual medley. He still has the 200-meter Individual Medley to try to win another medal for Team USA.
The qualifying heats for the Men’s 200-meter Individual Medley will be on Wednesday, July 28, beginning at 6:50am (ET). The semifinals will be on the same day, starting at 11:08pm (ET). The Men’s 200-meter Individual Final will be on Friday, July 29 at 10:16pm.
Andrew Wilson is another swimmer with ties to Montgomery County. He is a first-time Olympian coming in sixth place for the Men’s 100-meter breaststroke with a chance to medal in the Men’s 200-meter Breaststroke.
The Men’s 200 Meter-Breaststroke preliminaries begin on Tuesday, July 27 at 6:50am (ET). The semifinals will be on the same day at 10:21pm. On Wednesday, July 28th, the Men will compete for their Olympic medals at 9:44pm (ET).
One last swimmer from Montgomery County is first-time Olympian Phoebe Bacon. She is a 2020 graduate from Stone Ridge of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, Maryland, and will be a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin in the fall. During the Olympic trials in Omaha, Phoebe Bacon touched 2nd in the 200 backstroke in 2:06.46, securing her spot on the Olympic team. Bacon will swim for Team USA in the 200-meter backstroke. Watch her swim her event on Thursday, July 29th at 7:06am ET.
