Senator Ted Cruz is up for re-election and a new challenger from Dallas is vying for his seat in 2024. Representative Colin Allred is expected to make his announcement this week.

The incumbent Cruz was first elected to office in 2013. His challenger, Colin Allred is in his third term as the North Texas Congressman.

Allred is a former NFL football player and outside of the Dallas area, he is not well known.

The former football player graduated from Dallas Hillcrest High School, and he graduated from Baylor University where he played college football. Allred went on to play linebacker with the Tennessee Titans.

If he runs, Allred would face some stiff competition in this Republican state. Texas has not elected a Democrat statewide since 1994.

The last challenge Ted Cruz faced was in the 2018 election with Representative and presidential and Texas candidate for governor, Beto O’Rourke. O’Rourke came within three percentage points of defeating Cruz.

Allred is also a civil rights attorney before he came into public office. He defeated U.S. Representative Pete Sessions in 2018. The challenger has been quietly seeking fundraisers as he prepares to challenge Cruz.

The challenger has some experience in politics. Allred has worked in the general counsel’s office in the Department of Housing and Urban Development under the Obama administration. Then he worked as a civil rights attorney at the D.C.-based law firm Perkins Coie.

Here are some more details about the congressman.

Do you think Colin Allred has a chance to unseat Senator Cruz?
