As Vice President Kamala Harris made a recent trip to Arizona, she missed visiting the border. But it seems Governor Katie Hobbs has a plan already figured out to solve the migrant crisis in Arizona.

It’s nothing new, but the plan aims to help migrants and reduce some costs for Arizona taxpayers.

You see, former Governor Doug Ducey spent about $120 million to stack the shipping containers. Then he spent $75 million to remove them after the federal government said they were illegal and on government land. Hobbs is looking for other ways to use the containers since close to $200 million was already spent.

“We’re looking for ways to creatively repurpose the shipping containers that have been purchased by the taxpayers of Arizona.”

Governor Ducey also spent money bussing migrants to the nation’s capital copying the similar plan first started by Governor Greg Abbott in April last year.

On January 13, Governor Hobbs renewed the busing agreement according to CBS 5. There is one difference to the agreement. The Hobbs administration will also fly migrants to their desired destination. This administration is still using the same vendor as before to provide transportation.

At a press conference, Governor Hobbs said:

“I think its something that provides support to those local communities [along the border]. If we’re spending money to bus people, why not just get them to their final destination?”

Hobbs didn’t think what Governor Ducey started was 100% bad.

She said:

"It’s something that provides support to those local communities. If we’re spending money to bus people, why not just get them to their final destination?”

Press secretary Josselyn Berry followed up with the statement:

"We’re sending migrants to cities they actually need to go to and be connected with their sponsors, and we are doing it in a more cost-effective way by looking at all travel options, not just buses."

Here are the numbers

Under Governor Ducey, the administration spent about $82,000 per bus trip according to Arizona Central.

Now under Governor Hobbs, the administration has set aside $15 million to transport migrants to their final destination. The busing program is estimated to cost about $1 million per month.

The plan may work but it’s unlikely to help farmers who have already suffered as migrants destroyed crops and will hit your monthly grocery budget.
