Mayor Adams Said We Can’t Take It Anymore to Governor Hochul

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is in Washington, D.C. for the Annual Conference of Mayors. Though the mayors may talk about crime, inflation, and healthcare, there is one common theme shared by many. Mayor Adams said migrants are on his agenda and he thinks other cities need to share the responsibility, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

Mayor Adams has been dealing with migrants since last year as New York Governor Greg Abbott and El Paso, Texas Mayor Oscar Leeser bussed these foreign citizens to his city. Estimates believe there are about 40,000 migrants who arrived in New York City.

This puts a big financial problem for the mayor as he tries to find a way to support them.

Adams proposed to Governor Hochul to share the responsibility for supporting migrants. So far, the governor has remained noncommittal to this idea. The mayor may need to continue bringing up this issue with the governor so they can come up with a solution to this billion dollar problem.

Recently Mayor Adams said he estimates supporting migrants will come out to $2 billion. But his comptroller believes this is a low number as Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said the cost doesn’t cover future years supporting migrants.

Then in Washington, D.C., Mayor Adams wants to highlight the growing problem as cities face supporting migrants. The mayor recently returned from a one-day trip to El Paso to see the crisis up close this past weekend.

At the conference, Mayor Adams said:

"What I saw was not a state or city problem, it's a national problem."

He added:

"Today I'm calling for a national response to the asylum seeker crisis."
