With the addition of 19,000 migrants, New York City is getting overwhelmed. Mayor Eric Adams is feeling pressure from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, El Paso, Texas Mayor Oscar Leeser, as well as his own constituents.

And, city taxpayers are footing the bill for the migrants to provide housing, clothing, shelter, and food.

Adams said:

“This is a humanitarian crisis that started with violence and instability in South America, and it is being accelerated by American political dynamics. Thousands of asylum seekers have been bused into New York City and simply dropped off without notice, coordination of care and more are arriving every day. This crisis is not of our own making, but one that will affect everyone in this city, now and in the months ahead.”
“Our city is grappling with a homelessness crisis exacerbated by an international emergency that we did not create but demands effective and compassionate responses.”

Last week, Mayor Adams declared a State of Emergency.

Adams added:

“El Paso, the city manager, the mayor, they should stop sending buses to New York.”

On Wednesday, the Mayor opened a new migrant center in Midtown Manhatten at Row hotel. The center is expected to serve 200 migrants.

New York officials are putting pressure on Adams

NYIC Senior Director of Advocacy Abdullah Younus said there are about 8 to 12 buses that arrive daily. He doesn’t expect a slowdown in their arrival at least through the midterm elections.

Younus said:

“These buses arrive and people are just being dumped like produce basically at Port Authority.”
“These tent camps they’re trying to set up on Randall’s Island don’t meet requirements. They’re not safe. They’re not warm. They’re also located in a completely inaccessible place.”

Mayor Adams said:

“While an emergency relief center providing more effective intake services for asylum seekers than the Port Authority makes sense, neither outdoor locations of Orchard Beach nor Randall’s Island are adequate. There are better options that New York City should explore to provide healthier and safer conditions for people who have already experienced so much trauma.”

New York Governor is waiting on federal support

Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul has asked for support from the Biden administration.

She said:

“We want the federal government to see that this is a humanitarian crisis.”

Hochul added:

“We really are looking for a federal response to this – to take ownership of a crisis.”

The governor is working to get more federal funds to support the city of New York but has not directly provided any state funds up to this point.

Last month, the governor announced the creation of New York State's Institute for Immigration Integration Research & Policy to help immigrants get settled in New York.

Do you think President Biden or Governor Hochul should provide New York with more funding?
