Mayor Adams Wants to Use Cruise Ships to House Migrants
2022-10-03
New York Mayor Eric Adams is currently in talks with Norwegian Cruise Ship on housing the migrants for six months until the tent shelters are complete. Adams believes the migrants could surge up to 75,000 people which would severely overwhelm the city's resources. An estimate of 14,600 migrants have arrived in the city and some were bussed from Texas by Governor Greg Abbott who started sending them to New York City in August.
The cruise ship would dock at Staten Island’s Homeport according to the New York Post. If approved, the migrants can come and go while staying on the ship.
The mayor is also in talks with another Estonian cruise ship Tallink to house the migrants.
AOC and other political representatives have their doubts
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has disagreed with the mayor on several occasions. Then on Friday, she said about the cruise ship:
“I think we can get to a place with a better solution here.”
The representative hasn’t commented much on the migrants and is working to see if there are better solutions from the federal government.
Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella heard about the cruise story and wanted the Independent Budget Office to do a cost estimate of the impact of the migrants on the city.
“This thing is still very preliminary which is good because how is this becoming a Staten Island problem? This is a federal problem”
“Also, this pier is problematic. There’s no electricity there. Whatever they’re doing here it’s unsustainable.”
“I am not for this cruise. Let’s avoid cruising for a bruising. What’s next? RVs on the street? These problems should not become Staten Island’s problem.”
Then U.S. Representative Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn) angrily said: “This is a ludicrous idea that could only come out of an incompetent administration.”
“Both Biden and Adams refuse to address the root of the problem and, instead, continue to incentivize illegal immigration.”
“Secure our borders, reinstate ‘Remain in Mexico’ and add judges to hear legitimate asylum cases quickly. Democrats have abdicated their responsibility but when Republicans take the House we will put an end to this nonsense.”
Some think this may be the best idea for now
City Council Minority Leader Joe Borelli (R-SI) believes this may be the best idea for now.
“I knew this was a possibility but until Biden shuts off the border I am not sure how we can continue to accommodate these people without taking over every inch of parkland with tent cities.”
“This arguably may be a more reasonable way to cope with the crisis than people might think.”
The cruise ship will cost the city but it will be a temporary relief to house the migrants.
