Governor Abbott is Branding Migrants Like Cattle

When the latest arrival of migrants from Texas arrived in New York City, there was something different about this group from past migrants who arrived by bus. They all had bar-coded bracelets on their arm.

These migrants recently arrived in New York on Wednesday with the bracelet on their arms.

Governor Greg Abbott started sending migrants from Texas to New York City in August which has caused pushback from Mayor Eric Adams.

New York City Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs Manuel Castro said:

“Governor Abbott is bar-coding people and treating them as less than human, as if they were cattle. I was incredibly shocked when I saw children with bracelets and bar codes and security personnel treating them as less than human beings.”

He added:

“We know that Governor Abbott has been trying to dehumanize people, trying to foment anti-immigrant hatred, and while New York will continue to welcome asylum seekers, it’s also our moral responsibility to denounce this kind of behavior by Gov. Abbott.”

Castro said:

"It appears to us that asylum seekers are being asked to wear these bracelets with these bar codes to intimidate them, to scare them into remaining on these buses until they arrive in New York City."

In response to the accusations, Governor Abbott said New York officials need to stop with the:

“baseless lies and fearmongering.”

He told The Hill:

“This process also helps ensure we are only transporting migrants who have been processed and released by the federal government with federal documentation that allows them to move about the country.”

Castro added:

"We know that Governor Abbott has been trying to dehumanize people, trying to foment anti-immigrant hatred, and while New York will continue to welcome asylum seekers, it's also our moral responsibility to denounce this kind of behavior by Gov. Abbott."

Governor Abbott’s initiative works for him and Texas officials busing migrants but it is causing an issue for some New York officials. Some believe Adams is not focusing on the right priorities as Mayor.
