Texas Migrants are Causing Problems in Washington, D.C.
2022-08-18
Migrants continue to cross the border and many have run into issues. Either they were unprepared for what to expect when they enter the United States or their plans didn’t go as expected.
Once the migrants crossed from Mexico to Texas, many were apprehended by border patrol and the Department of Public Safety. Since Texas Governor Greg Abbott bussed many out of state to Washington D.C. and New York City, not everything has gone as planned for the migrants.
Proper planning for the migrants was not the main concern, and that has left them with trouble finding permanent shelter.
Tatiana Laborde the managing director at SAMU First Response said:
“Initially, there were families who welcomed immigrants into their own homes. We had a two-week shelter for a very small group, but opportunities to have long-term housing for immigrants have truly never existed.
Then Luis Huertas arrived at that same conclusion.
As soon as he arrived in Washington, D.C. he said:
“[Someone] attacked me and punched me very hard.”
He was soon admitted to a hospital, but he lacked identification so he was not treated immediately.
"It's impossible to get opportunities, a job, maybe a home, when doors are closed to you just because you don't have papers.”
Administrators have issues with migrants as well…
Migrants have issues when they enter the United States. But the migrants bring their own issues to the areas they occupy.
Texas and Arizona bus out the migrants for Washington D.C. and New York City which has caused problems in those cities.
New York’s commissioner of Immigrant Affairs Manuel Castro said:
“Many other people who are here have told us that the families who have boarded the buses in Texas don’t want to go to New York City.”
Then in Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser said:
“[i]n many cases, those people are boarding buses having been lied to about what’s going to be on the other end…”
On another occasion, a bus stopped from Texas to Washington, D.C., and a McDonald’s employee in Chattanooga told WTVC:
“I had to get the police to remove them from the premises, which they turn and started sitting over at the gas station. After that, we haven’t seen them for a while. The two young ones kept on going from here to over there, to the gas station, just trying to get money from people.”
As more migrants continue to enter southern states, this could cause more problems as people have reported.
What do you think Washington, D.C. should do about the migrants?
