New Texas Poll Has Democrats Crossing Party Lines to Support Abbott

2022-08-15

In a recent Dallas Morning News University of Texas at Tyler poll, Governor Greg Abbott continues to maintain a strong lead over challenger Beto O’Rourke. The poll showed Abbott was ahead by 7 points.

The latest poll had Governor Abbott leading 46 percent to 39 percent over O’Rourke for the governor’s seat with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 points.

Even though O’Rourke out earned Abbott in campaign funds recently, that may not be enough.

And, O’Rourke will have to rely on his 49-day travel across Texas to pull more voters to his side come election day on November 8. O’Rourke is about halfway through traveling 5,600 miles. You can see O’Rourke’s upcoming stops here.

These issues haven’t changed voter habits

After the Supreme Court changed the landmark decision of Roe vs. Wade, and the gun issue, these have not pushed more voters to support challenger Beto O’Rourke who is strongly against the current laws.

The Hill reported Democratic voters have crossed the party line to support Governor Abbott at 12% and 8% of Republicans switched parties to support O'Rourke.

Professor of political science at SMU Matthew Wilson said:

“If we’re at the same place post-Dobbs that we were pre-Dobbs, it suggests that Abbott is weathering that potential storm.”

Voters continue to trust Abbott over O’Rourke on issues such as reducing crime, the economy, and securing the border.

Wilson added there is some concern what if O’Rourke wins?

“I think there is a lot of concern across the political spectrum about the direction that the nation and the state are heading.”

The race is close, but Abbott continues to maintain a good lead over his challenger.

Do you see Governor Abbott or O’Rourke winning this race?
