Preacher with Semiautomatic Rifle Challenges O'Rourke

2022-08-03

Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade in June, this has caused numerous debates and protests, as well as people and companies changing their stance on abortion. Abortion clinics also stopped providing abortions and some moving out of state. The state of Texas declared its stance last year when Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 8. The bill provides citizens the right to sue abortion providers if a baby's heartbeat is detected.

This has become a common issue that Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke has come across numerous times as he continues his travels across Texas leading to the November 8 election for governor.

In a recent stop, Beto O’Rourke stopped in Hemphill Texas which is about 100 miles northeast of Houston. This is a small town with about 1,029 people according to the 2020 census.

At this stop, O’Rourke was confronted by a preacher with a semiautomatic rifle.

After stating several Bible verses, the armed preacher asked O’Rourke:

“How do we deal with the murder of the unborn for anything other than to save a woman’s life?”

The preacher also mentioned there were powerful people who were products of rape when he said:

“There are great men of God who are products of rape.”

This is a usual response from opponents of abortion.

O’Rourke responded to the preacher that they weren’t going to settle this topic as the two had different views on the topic. O’Rourke added they weren’t:

“going to change each other’s minds on some of these very basic definitions.”
“This decision is best made by the woman, who understands better than anyone else the nature of her pregnancy, the complications it might endure, any other issue that is unique and personal and private as her.”

Abortion rights activists have pushed for the Supreme Court to make abortion legal. This has also caused some Texas politicians to get charged for obstructing traffic and imprisoned while they were protesting recently.

O’Rourke handled himself well at this event. One of his goals if elected is to try and change the Texas stance on abortion.

How do you feel about O’Rourke and his platform on abortion?
