Governor Abbott Thanks Bo Jackson Who Donated to the Uvalde Funerals

    2022-07-22

Months after the Uvalde shooting near San Antonio, Texas, one of the mysterious donors revealed himself. Former pro-baseball and football star, Bo Jackson and an unknown friend covered the cost of the funeral for the people killed in Uvalde.

On May 24, a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers during school hours. The incident shocked the small town. Because of the incident, some Texas schools are changing some procedures for this school year.

Jackson wanted to take the burden off the families and cover the costs of the funeral.

Bo Jackson told the Associated Press:

“I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting old. It’s just not right for parents to bury their kids. It’s just not right. I know every family there probably works their butts off just to do what they do … The last thing they needed was to shell out thousands of dollars for something that never should have happened.”

On May 27, Governor Abbott said in a statement an anonymous donation was made during a news press conference.

    Abbott said in a statement:

"The true spirit of our nation is Americans lifting up one another in times of need and hardship. We are truly grateful for the generosity of Texans and Americans like Bo Jackson, who have stepped up to help in the aftermath of the shooting at Robb Elementary School. When we asked people to support the Uvalde community in the days after, Bo did not hesitate in reaching out to my office to offer his help to the grieving families."

    Jackson said:

“We didn’t want media. No one knew we were there … Uvalde is just a town that sticks in your mind. Just the name. I don’t know a soul there. It just touched me.”

    Jackson added:

“I don’t want to turn this into anything [but] what it is. I was just trying [with the donation] to put a little sunshine in someone’s cloud, a very dark cloud … It’s the children. It’s the children. It’s the children. If it doesn’t bother you, something’s wrong with you.”

Bo Jackson was a professional two-sport star athlete who split his playing time between professional baseball and football before an injury ended his career early.
