With the Race Getting Tight, Governor Abbott tries New Tactic in Campaign

2022-06-30

Only a few weeks ago, Texas Governor Greg Abbott tried this new campaign tactic against challenger Beto O’Rourke. Now, the Governor who is leading in money raised unleashes more ads targeting O’Rourke.

The Governor in Austin knows he needs to win and win big if he wants to beat O’Rourke. His challenger is no easy opponent. In the race for Senate, O’Rourke was close when he campaigned against Senator Ted Cruz and only lost by 2.6 percent. In that election, O’Rourke raised $80 million in his bid for office.

Then O’Rourke made a big run for the Democratic seat for President for the 2022 election. Abbott’s challenger knows how to gain the support of the local Texas citizens. So Abbott is putting in his best effort to defeat him.

Recently, Abbott had $49.8 million in campaign funding to O’Rourke’s 6.8 million as of February according to the Texas Tribune. The next fundraising report is due July 15.

Abbott does not plan to let O’Rourke beat him and plans to outspend him according to his chief strategist Dave Carney.

The Governor’s recent ad buy includes a minimum amount of $2.75 million for Hispanic media, $8.8 million separately for TV, and $8.15 million for digital platforms.

O’Rourke’s campaign spokesperson Chris Evans said:

“Abbott and his corporate donors have no choice but to resort to blanketing the airwaves with millions of dollars in false ads as his poll numbers plummet, his job approval tanks, and Texans of both political parties continue to oppose his dangerous extremism.”

Not to be let down, O’Rourke is working with comedian and producer Eugene Lee Yang who said:

“It’s never been more clear that we need new leadership in Texas — I believe Beto O’Rourke is the answer. I’m so proud to be a Texan, but it’s sickening to see Greg Abbott & Texas Republicans design laws that are meant to harm anyone who doesn’t fit their idea of what Texas should be — whether it be low-income Texans, LGBTQ+ Texans, Texans with disabilities, Black Texans, Latino Texans, AAPI Texans, you name it. That’s why on July 11th, I’ll be in San Antonio trying to raise some money for Beto O’Rourke and the Texas Democratic Party so they can organize communities across the state, register as many voters as possible, and finally rid us of right-wing, extremist politicians. There will be local food, music, art, and most importantly, a chance for people to hear from Beto, who’s running to represent Texans and OUR interests.”

On July 11 at 5 pm, O’Rourke, Yang, and the Democratic Party will be in San Antonio hosting ‘This is Texas’. The fundraiser will be at Freight Gallery and 1906 Gallery in San Antonio’s Southtown Arts District.

Then Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement:

“We’re thrilled to have our ticket led by someone as dogged and determined as Beto O’Rourke – who spares no efforts to ensure we have the resources to fight back and win, not just for his race, but for races up and down the ballot. Beto knows how to mobilize and activate young voters – a crucial voting bloc to our success in November – through events like ‘This is Texas.’ We’re looking forward to having Beto in San Antonio next month and are excited to see the resources this event will bring to our fight.”

Do you think Beto O'Rourke will see more money come in for his campaign?
