Six Unique Facts to Know About Matthew McConaughey If He Runs For Governor

The actor is planning his next political move.

An actor is considering a run for Texas governor and this conservative state could be a challenge. Matthew McConaughy has hinted several times about making a run for governor in the 2022 elections again Governor Greg Abbott.

McConaughey was a film student at the University of Texas in Austin. His bartender friend told McConaughey about the casting director while at the Hyatt hotel bar. McConaughey introduced himself to casting director Don Phillips.

Philips wasn’t sure if McConaughey was the right fit but McConaughey transformed himself in less than a minute to fit the role. As filming started, he amazed the cast and crew as McConaughey instantly fit in his role.

Following this film, McConaughey starred in A Time to Kill a few years later. He soon became a leading star in Hollywood.

Is governor next for this actor?

McConaughey has mentioned a few times he is seriously considering a run for Texas governor.

The actor told Houston podcast host Rania Mankarious that he is considering a run for governor. 

“Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role? What’s my category in my next chapter of life that I’m going into?”

Asked again if he would run for governor

On the Hugh Hewitt Show in November 2020, McConaughey was asked if he would run for governor.

“I don’t know. I mean, that wouldn’t be up to me. It would be up to the people more than it would me.”

He added “Look, politics seems to be a broken business to me right now. And when politics redefines its purpose, I could be a hell of a lot more interested,”

McConaughey continues to leave cryptic messages if he is running for governor of Texas. 

McConaughey is pro-mask

When Governor Abbott lifted the mask mandate this month, McConaughey disagreed with the decision.

“My reaction to that is… I was a little dumbfounded by the decision,” in a CBS morning interview. 

He thinks wearing a mask a little inconvenient to help save lives.

Later on, McConaughey told the Austin Statesmen that he would be a fool to not consider running for Texas governor.

Where does the actor politically stand?

As for where McConaughey politically stands, he last voted in the 2012 Texas primary election. He has not made any political donations. It is not clear if McConaughey will run as a Democrat or Republican. 

McConaughey has not shared any insight on what way he is leaning as far as his political beliefs.

A politician could stand in McConaughey’s way on the path to governor

Former US Representative Beto O’Rourke from El Paso, Texas made a run at the presidency in 2020 but lost as a democratic candidate. O’Rourke could make a run at governor in the upcoming elections next year. 

O’Rourke could make the race for governor challenging if he decides to run as well as McCaughey challenging Governor Abbott.

McConaughey would not be the first actor to turn politician

Former President Ronald Reagan went from acting to California governor from 1967 to 1975 and then President of the United States from 1980 to 1988. 

Arnold Schwarzenegger went from bodybuilding to acting to governor of California from 2003 to 2011. 

Professional wrestler Jesse Ventura served as the 38th Governor of Minnesota from 1999 to 2003. 

For Matthew McConaughey to go from acting to governor is not an impossibility. He already has the popularity but the question is where does he stand politically?
