“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” — Mark Twain

If 2020 has taught us all anything it is that life can get hard. It is in these moments of struggle, I feel, that our character is truly tested and defined. Some people have the ability to take their struggles and turn them into wins. How do they do this so effectively time and again?

Difficulties refine your character

As a person with more than my fair share of life’s difficulties and trauma; if I can do it, so can you. It is all a matter of taking charge of how you face your challenges.

There’s no time for wallowing when your future is at stake. Life can and will bowl you over. But there are things you can do right now, right away, to resist the pits of failure and create wins for yourself.

(Get your journal and pen, you’ll want to write these down.)

7 dynamic habits that will help you turn your struggles into wins

Don’t take it personally

Contrary to what you may feel, life is not out to get you. It is not personal. Life can and will be difficult as the nature of things may be, but do not waste your time lamenting the unfairness of it all.

Don’t wait for someone to save you

You and only you can get yourself up and make something of yourself. The longer you wait for others to step in and save you from yourself, from your circumstances, and from your own emotional weight, the longer you are wasting crucial opportunities to build character, strength, and self-esteem.

Get up and get busy

Truly successful people do not sit around making excuses; they make things happen. They do not find reasons to put things off — they find opportunities to move their circumstances in a more satisfying direction. They set goals and they work to achieve them, no matter how they are feeling. No matter what is going on around them, the self-motivation kicks in and they get busy.

You can do that for yourself as well.

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” — Nelson Mandela

Create your own opportunities

Don’t wait for opportunities to simply land in your lap. Find them. Create them. Any set of circumstances is filled with opportunity if you know how to look for them, how to identify an opportunity when you see it, and how to create opportunities for yourself.

“People who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” — Rob Siltanen

Be resilient

The most common compliment I receive is that I am resilient. This is code for “you’ve really been through some crap but you just keep going.” You’re dang right. I do.

Resilience is the opposite of whining. The opposite of giving up. It is the “grit” that only challenges can teach you. Learn quickly to be resilient because the life lessons that teach it can be painful.

Bounce back quickly. Take your pain and your frustration and learn to curb it momentarily. Compartmentalize those feelings and manage them bit by bit because your life passes you by as you become complacent in your pain.

Don’t focus on what you can’t do; focus on what you CAN DO

If you keep a running list in your head of all the things you cannot do, you will find yourself burdened by the weight of it. There is always something you can do. No matter how small, focus on that one thing until you finish it. These small accomplishments add up and they feed your self-esteem. These small tasks or big dreams all add up to a focused and driven path that leads you to where you want to be.

“Just do what must be done. This may not be happiness, but it is greatness.” — George Bernard Shaw

Be your own source of positivity

Inner positivity is a gift you can give yourself. The inner drive for something better. The inner choice to be happy in your circumstances and look for inspiration in the world around you. No one can take that from you. (And if they are trying to do so, trust me, you don’t need them.)

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” — Chinese Proverb

If my life’s struggles have taught me anything at all it is that I am a strong woman who has the capability of managing great stress. My body settles into stress and trauma like an old companion. My brain kicks into gear looking for ways to improve my situation. I work long and hard to climb back into the sunlight. And if I can’t find the sunlight, I make my own.
