Madison, Georgia, is located about an hour east of Atlanta and 30 minutes from Athens, Georgia. It's known for antebellum homes, lush gardens, and charming downtown area. When planning a visit to Madison, Georgia, you may start with researching activities and finding accommodations. But one of the simplest ways to enjoy a visit to Madison involves an app--and it's completely free for both Android and iOS users. The app is Madison, GA, Downtown Tour, and here's everything you need to know about this invaluable resource.

#1 An Introduction To Madison

The home screen of the app includes a two-minute introduction to the history of Madison. Find out when it was founded and how much it's changed over the years. This isn't a comprehensive history, but it will give you a little background into this beautiful destination.

Grab your walking shoes because this self-guided tour has 26 stops along the way! Begin at the Welcome Center. This is an invaluable stop, as you can grab a map and ask for recommendations for dining, shopping, and activities. Expect a friendly face and helpful suggestions.

If you don't want to go inside or are visiting outside of business hours, the app will also greet you at this first stop along the way. Each stop has photos and/or short videos about the history of the location. Enjoy this self-paced, guided tour of the city.

#3 Never Get Lost

The app also includes a map of the downtown area to help you get to each location. It also has information about area parking as well as links to each social media page you can follow for news and recommendations. If you end up getting lost anyway, feel free to ask a friendly local to be pointed in the right direction.

Walking is by far the best way to see Madison. Because the town is small, there are no bus tours or other public tours currently available--although tours are occasionally offered seasonally. While driving around Madison can be a way to see the area quickly and cycling is also recommended, there's little to beat a walk around town for absorbing the beauty of the area.

While many of the downtown shops offer accessibility options such as ramps, keep in mind that the downtown sidewalks are not always as accessible. Still, the app can be useful for a tour by car. Simply pull over at each stop to learn more about the town.

While walking around town and learning about the history, you will see how much the town has changed--and how much it has to offer its visitors. Stroll downtown and enjoy nutritious smoothies, farm-to-table markets and dining, local goods and services, a wide array of shopping options, handmade chocolate, local books and art, and beautiful area parks. Enjoy a day trip, weekend getaway, or vacation right here in Madison.
