Deputies responded and found a white Econoline van in the vicinity around 2:31 a.m. The van was now traveling north in the northbound lanes.

Deputies followed the van for a short time before stopping it at 2:33 a.m., a mile north of Sun 'n Lakes Blvd.

A deputy made contact with the driver and only occupant of the van at this point. The deputy opted to cite the driver, 68-year-old white male Robert W. McNamara, for failure to maintain a single lane during the traffic stop.

Mr. McNamara refused to stay in his vehicle and became combative with the deputy while the deputy was issuing the citation. Mr. McNamara got out of his van and approached the deputy as the deputy was finishing the citation.

Mr. McNamara produced a pistol-grip shotgun in black and fired a round at the deputy. The officer who issued the citation and another deputy fired gunfire, striking Mr. McNamara multiple times.

Mr. McNamara was treated by deputies until Emergency Medical Services came and pronounced him dead at 3:23 a.m.
