March is for more than St. Patrick's Day: March 1 - 5: Part 1 of 6

March is right around the corner, and while many people look forward to drinking green beer on St. Patrick’s Day, there’s more to March than flat beer.

Here’s what to look forward to from March 1 – 5:

March 1: National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day

This day honors the superb qualities of peanut butter. It tastes indulgent, yet it’s healthy. It’s also versatile, so it can be used in any meal or dessert or can even be eaten by the spoonful out of the jar. Its famous counterparts are jelly/jam, toast, raw veggies, and even chocolate!

March 2: Dr. Seuss's Birthday and National Read Across America Day

Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, was born on March 2, 1904. He has written numerous familiar children’s books, such as The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. Not only was Dr. Suess a prolific writer, but he also has been credited with creating the word, “nerd.” It was first used in the book entitled If I Ran the Zoo, which was published in 1950.

Every year, on or around Dr. Suess’s birthday, National Read Across America Day is celebrated. Created by the National Education Association in 1998, this is a day designed to encourage kids to read, for parents to read to their kids, and for families to join their local libraries. March 3: World Wildlife Day

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was first signed in 1973. In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed March 3 as UN World Wildlife Day to raise awareness of the world’s endangered wild animals and plants. This year, the theme will be, “Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration.”

March 4: National Grammar Day

National Grammar Day is a United States observance day that encourages people to use correct grammar whilst writing and speaking. English is notoriously tough to learn as a second language. The Global Language Monitor estimates that the English language encompasses over one million words. In 2008, the founder of the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar, Martha Brockenbrough, declared March 4 as National Grammar Day. Learn more HERE.

March 4 - 5: National Day of Unplugging

Over a decade ago, the nonprofit organization Unplug Collaborative declared the first weekend of every March to be the National Day of Unplugging. This awareness campaign encourages families, schools, religious institutions, and businesses to use Unplug Collaborative’s resources to inspire healthy life/tech balance in their communities and anyone who wishes to elevate human connection over digital engagement.
