Beat the Heat: How to Stay Cool at the Minnesota State Fair
2023-08-24
With average highs in the 90s during the Great Minnesota Get-Together, things can get steamy.
Here are some top tips for staying cool and comfortable during your State Fair visit.
Hydrate Regularly
Dehydration sneaks up fast while walking for hours in the sun. Bring a waterbottle with you and fill up one of the many free water stations conveniently located around the fairgrounds.
There are 9 locations listed onthe map like at the 4-H and Agriculture/Horticulture buildings.
Some of the coldest free water is at the Culligan Booth, offering free fillups. They are located on the Northwest corner of Dan Patch Ave. & Cosgrove St.
Hydrating regularly as soon as you wake up, while in lines, between food stops, and throughout the day is advised.
Seek Out AC
When that midday sun beats down, nothing beats a good air conditioned break.
Fairgoers can duck into the History & Heritage Center at West End Market or Eco Experience building to cool down in AC comfort.
The Blue Flame Gas building also offer indoor heat relief on hot days.
Pop into the air-conditioned first aid tents if you start feeling faint. First Aid West is across from the West End Market and First Aid East on the outside of North End of the 4-H building.
Misting Stations
These open-air oases provide instant cooling refreshment. Seek them out near major thoroughfares.
Alternativly you can bring your own spary bottle and mist yourself as needed.
A quick mist-down re-energizes fairgoers to keep exploring.
Use Sun Protection
Fairgoers should load up on sunscreen, sunglasses and hats to prevent overheating, along with taking shade breaks.
Wide-brimmed hats shield from the intensity of direct sun.
Re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours as sweating decreases effectiveness. You can snag some free sunblock at the information booths.
Umbrellas also help block sun while waiting in lines. People will give you envious looks!
Dress Appropriately
Light, breathable clothing helps sweat evaporate to regulate body temperature on scorching fair days.
Avoiding dark colors that absorb heat and sticking with light cottons or dri-fit fabrics is recommended.
A cooling towel around the neck offers a simple way to cool down while walking outdoors.
Cool Treats
When all else fails, indulg in refreshing treats. You can beat the heat by treating yourself to a rereshing desert.
There are plenty of great options, but the dairy booth is always a favorite. There is also great iceies and non-diary options just outside.
Stay Cool and Enjoy the Great MN Get Together
Staying cool at the fair just takes planning ahead with hydration, sun protection, AC breaks, and breathable clothing.
