It is no secret that the Alabama prison system desperately needs reform. In 2020, the DOJ filed a lawsuit against ADOC for unconstitutional conditions. The DOJ came and investigated the prisons only to confirm the alleged conditions were very bit as bad, if not worse, than had been reported.

Since the DOJ investigation, Alabama has yet to make progress toward making the prison system safer. Some may argue that prison conditions are worse now than before the DOJ lawsuit. Ultimately, the solution they came up with was to use COVID relief funds to construct two brand new prisons that would not even fix the overcrowding issues they currently have. The prison's construction is scheduled for completion in 2026.

Given the lack of remedial efforts by Alabama state officials, a member of a group of inmate advocates has started a petition on Change.org to address the issues still being overlooked or downright denied by ADOC. A grassroots movement is demanding accountability and transparency through the mandatory use of body cameras for all correctional officers.

The petition, spearheaded by concerned citizen Mitera Arktos, highlights an alarming pattern of brutality, rape, drug trafficking, and even murder within the state's correctional facilities. These incidents, far from being isolated, have become a grim reality for many residents, instilling fear and uncertainty about the safety of inmates and the integrity of the system.

Advocates argue that by mandating body cameras, Alabama can take a significant stride toward addressing these systemic issues. The proposed measure seeks to shed light on alleged misconduct by prison personnel, providing irrefutable evidence in cases of abuse, coercion, and neglect.

The call for action comes amidst mounting pressure on lawmakers to prioritize reforms within the state's prison system. With numerous high-profile incidents drawing public scrutiny, the need for increased oversight and accountability has never been more pressing.

As the petition gains traction, let it remind us of the urgent need to uphold the principles of safety and justice within Alabama's correctional facilities. With each signature, citizens lend their voice to a cause seeking meaningful change in an environment of violence and secrecy.
