UPDATE: For those shots in the dark at Eisenhower Park, Judge Geoffrey Prime sets $500,000 bail
2023-06-07
Lamichael D. Taylor will be waking up in jail today. It's his third day as a resident of Block B at Nassau County Correctional Center, where he's been since Monday when a judge set his bail at $500,000 bond or, if he can't afford that, $250,000 cash instead.
It could be worse. For now, that's what Taylor needs to get released from his cell on Carman Avenue in East Meadow.
Taylor's due back in court again today. The next judge could lower his bail, if his lawyer, Adrienne Hausch, can convince the court that her client's not a flight risk. Police arrested Taylor on Merrick Avenue after he climbed over a fence and kept running. He was caught with a semi-automatic Smith & Wesson handgun. Those "violent Felony" charges -- an illegal gun, random shooting in a public space, a prior conviction -- make it risky to lower that bail. Judges don't like risks. Neither do voters.
Taylor, 34, was arraigned before District Court Judge Geoffrey Noel Prime Monday in Hempstead, as his family and friends watched in disbelief.
Taylor was arrested Sunday evening after a flood of 911 calls about shots fired in the park. Several events were in progress at the time, including an 8 p.m. Latin hip-hop concert and a baseball game. Police declared, in legal filings referenced at his arraignment, that Taylor confessed. That may be hard to believe, but it isn't that rare for police to pull that off. Police provided a Freeport address for Taylor in court filings.
When the shooting was initially reported, investigators said they had counted 5 shell casings. But some witnesses insisted there were more.
One witness was at his son's baseball game with his wife when the gunfire began. They counted "at least 20 shots", he said. The couple believes there were "multiple shooters" involved in the Sunday shooting spree: "The shots were coming from opposite directions."
It's unclear if they told this to police. Law enforcement was deployed at park exits, where they interviewed potential witnesses in their cars as they left.
Taylor was charged with three Felonies:
Reckless Endangerment, 1st degree, a D Felony
Gun possession, 3rd degree after a previous conviction, a D Felony
Possession of a loaded gun, a C Felony
No motive, if any, has been offered by police for the gunfire, and no injuries have been reported.
Wednesday's court session will almost certainly be adjourned.
