Explore Kansas City's history: Alexander Majors House and Museum reopens in April

In 1856, successful businessman, Alexander Majors, built a house near 81st Street and State Line Road in Missouri. It's a two-story farmhouse now operating as a museum. After being closed for the winter season, it will reopen for visitors on April 6.

The Alexander Majors House and Museum in Kansas City offer visitors a unique opportunity to explore some of the histories of the city. This historic home is a living reminder of the city's past, with its furnishings and artifacts from the 19th century. With the reopening of tours after the winter season, visitors can take tours of this beautiful antebellum home and learn about its rich history, including stories about its former owner, Alexander Majors.

Not only will visitors get to experience a piece of Kansas City’s past, but they’ll also get to see some of the architecture. The refurnished 3,400 square foot home for the history period of time will transport your imagination. Also important is that on April 3, 1970, this house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Visitors will see more than the exterior, but a reproduction of the interior as well. Imagine the life of Alexander Majors who was one of the businessmen associated with the creation of the Pony Express. The house served as his operational base for the overland shipping company of Russell, Majors & Waddell. This prominent transportation company managed the transport of freight, mail, and passengers during the mid-1800s. It also established the Pony Express mail service from 1860 to 1861. In visiting the house and museum, you'll learn more about the Majors' life too.

Hours of operation for self-guided tours are 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Thursday to Sunday. What's nice about a self-guided tour is having the ability to enjoy what you're viewing at your own pace.
