VDOT issued travel alerts announcing there will be extended closures in two work areas in the Fredericksburg region.

Fredericksburg single-lane closure

In Fredericksburg, along I-95 southbound, one of the local travel lanes will be closed 24/7 until May 20.

The lane closure begins south of the on-ramp from the parking lot of the I-95 Southbound Safety Rest Area and Welcome Center at Fredericksburg and ends north of the exit 130 (Route 3) interchange, VDOT’s traffic alert explained.

This closure is due to an emergency maintenance repair that’s needed to address severe erosion along the shoulder at mile marker 131, the department said.

But since the Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project added new capacity in the area, despite this one-lane closure, two southbound travel lanes remain open in the local travel lanes between exit 133 in Stafford County and exit 130. Three southbound travel lanes also remain open in the through travel lanes between these interchanges, said VDOT.

Ladysmith Rd. detour

In Caroline County, Ladysmith Rd. (Route 639) closed on April 5, and it was scheduled to reopen to motorists this month. However, this week VDOT sent out a travel alert announcing the area between S. River Road (Route 638 ) and Scott’s Lane (Route 764) will be closed to through traffic until late June.

VDOT is repairing a large drainage box culvert on Ladysmith Road over May’s Run. The department’s alert explained that after excavation work started on the project “additional deterioration was discovered at the culvert, requiring further design and construction work to restore the site and drainage features.”

The recommended detour route is approximately 16 miles and can accommodate trucks:

  • Route 1
  • Route 601 (Golansville Road)
  • Route 207 (Rogers Clark Boulevard)

Here’s a map of the detour route.
