Forensics firm's $2 million project to add 70+ STEM jobs in Fairfax

2022-04-13

Virginia is set to add several dozen STEM jobs thanks to Bode Technology, a Lorton-based forensics company that plans to invest $2 million to expand its DNA testing lab in Fairfax County.

To help fight crime, the company needs to hire the most talented scientists in the world, and it’s recruiting that talent from across the county, explained Bode CEO Mike Cariola in a press release. Meanwhile, demand for Bode’s services has increased, he added.

So, Bode plans to invest in an overhaul of its laboratory and the tools it uses in hopes of attracting and retaining the scientists it wants as well as to increase capacity and improve workflow, the company explained in a statement.

Work on the project will take place later this year and Bode expects the expansion to create over 70 new jobs, which will include senior and entry-level laboratory technicians, forensic science professionals and other business support roles, the company also noted in its statement.

Delegate Kathy Tran is “thrilled” by the idea. “This investment will help create new science and technology jobs and will help diversify our local economy. This is great news for our community and a testament to Fairfax County's many strengths,” she said via press release.

And Senator George Barker also weighed in. “Bode’s systems help identify criminals and victims of tragedies, such as war, crimes and natural disasters. We all benefit from their work,” he stated in the press release.

The news of the expansion even drew a statement from Governor Glenn Youngkin, who emphasized that Bode is a “Virginia-founded firm.”

“Biotechnology is evolving rapidly in the 21st century and leading firms like Bode help drive the Commonwealth’s position as a leader in this vital sector. We look forward to continuing to see the company’s impact and thank Bode Technology for its confidence in Virginia,” the governor's press release said.
